When we met for our Zoom consultation, Art was ready for new updates images. Their last professional headshots were taken about five years ago, when the website was first built, and as he put it, “I was kind of dreading redoing the website because I knew it would be a big thing.” But between the growth of their private practice and the need for images that actually reflect who they are now, the timing felt unavoidable.

Dr. Arthur Jenkins is a board-certified neurosurgeon, and Sarah Jenkins is a board-certified acute care nurse practitioner. They’ve worked together for more than 15 years, including their time at Mount Sinai, and have been running their private practice for the past six. Art described it as “our baby,” something they built intentionally so they could practice medicine the way they believe it should be practiced.

They focus on a small number of complex, poorly understood spinal conditions, conduct and publish their own research, and operate a self-funded clinical research arm alongside patient care. Just as importantly, they were clear about why they left larger institutions behind. “Healthcare became too bureaucratic,” Arthur said. They wanted the freedom to innovate, to develop programs, and to spend real time with patients, not five rushed minutes, but thirty minutes or more, including follow-ups. Their tagline says it best, “We turn patients back into people.”

For this branding session my goals were to do my best to reflect that philosophy visually. The images needed to match the caliber of their expertise while still conveying the care, and dedication to their patients.

Behind The Lens: Crafting the Photoshoot

Maria, our wardrobe stylist, did an outstanding job dressing Art and Sarah, they both have incredible taste and everything felt intentional and polished. The looks we planned supported exactly what they wanted to convey, high-level, modern, and confident, while still feeling approachable to patients.

One of my favorite moments came after we wrapped their primary images. During the session, it slipped that Sara was a recording artist who goes by the name Sadeilla. You’ve never seen me get so excited so fast!! I insisted she let me photograph her as Sadeilla. With a little nudging of encouragement from Art and my team, we switched gears, put her in a sparkly dress, brought up a rich maroon backdrop, and captured a second set of images she could use for that creative side of her work as well. It was an exhausting day for all of us, but we had an absolute blast and it was a great reminder that people are rarely just one thing, and I love when a session leaves room to go off script and have a little fun!
